Get Started

What’s the First Step?

The first step to getting a Chemical Peel at The Kaga Academy of Aesthetics & Concierge Medicine is to schedule an in-person consultation with Dr. Mai Kaga. During the consultation, she will ask you about your medical history, aesthetic history, and specific target areas, concerns, and expectations. She will then evaluate your skin condition and the areas of concern to recommend the type and strength of peel to address your needs. At the end of the consultation, she will recommend a treatment plan for you.

You can receive your chemical peel immediately following your consultation, or if you’d prefer, you can then schedule your appointment for a convenient time later. Our patient coordinator will help you with scheduling, pricing, and any pre- and post-treatment instructions.

What to Expect on the Day of a Chemical Peel

On the day of your chemical peel, Dr. Kaga and her staff will welcome you, set you up in the treatment room, and ensure that you have no questions and/or concerns about the treatment plan.

She will then cleanse the target area, which will be cleaned before the treatment. Depending on the strength of the peel, you’ll be given a topical anesthetic to ease the process should there be any discomfort. The chemical solution will then be applied to the target area for a few minutes. You might sense some burning, but given the anesthetic, it should be minimal. The chemical solution will be wiped immediately, and a neutralizing solution will be applied to stop the chemical reaction. A handheld fan is also provided should you need extra cooling in the area.

The treatment could take anywhere from fifteen minutes to a few hours, depending on the size of the treatment area and the depth/strength of your Chemical Peel.

Chemical Peel Recovery

Even though chemical peels have a low recovery downtime, we recommend taking it easy on the day of the treatment. It is common to see mild swelling and reddening of the target area. Within a day, a scab will form to cover the newly formed skin. It is important not to proactively try to remove it. Let it stay and fall off naturally with the use of the recommended ointments.

After the crust falls off within a few days, your face will appear flushed and then slowly gain its normal complexion as your skin regenerates fully over the next few weeks. Most lighter freckles and birthmarks will disappear; however, heavier freckles will still be noticeable.

We recommend that you avoid sunlight as best as possible for the first three weeks, as your pigmentation will have been stripped away during the treatment. Once your pigmentation returns, we strongly encourage you to wear good sunblock. After this three-week mark, you can wear light makeup again, but keep an eye out for any irritation of the skin. If you feel skin irritation, immediately stop using any product on your skin and contact our office.
