Introduction to Laser Skin Resurfacing

If aging, acne, or too much time in the sun has left your face with blotches, scars, wrinkles, or lines, laser skin resurfacing may help your skin look younger and healthier. Laser skin resurfacing removes skin layer by layer with precision, and the new skin cells that form during healing give your skin a tighter and younger-looking surface. If you are considering laser skin resurfacing in Red Bank, come and visit our team at The Kaga Academy of Aesthetics & Concierge Medicine.

The Kaga Academy is located in Red Bank, New Jersey, and conveniently sees laser resurfacing patients from Colts Neck, Little Silver, Fair Haven, Rumson, and other surrounding areas. Whatever township, city, or county you’re coming from, we look forward to helping you reach your skincare goals!

What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser Skin Resurfacing is a facial rejuvenation procedure that uses a laser to improve the skin’s appearance or treat minor facial flaws. It can be done with:

  • Ablative laser: This type of laser removes the thin outer layer of skin (epidermis) and heats the underlying skin (dermis), stimulating the growth of collagen—a protein that improves skin firmness and texture. The treated area appears smoother and tighter as the epidermis heals and regrows. Types of ablative therapy include a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser, an erbium laser, and combination systems.
  • Nonablative laser or light source: This approach also stimulates collagen growth. It’s a less aggressive approach than an ablative laser and has a shorter recovery time. But the results are less noticeable. Types include pulsed-dye laser, erbium (Er: YAG), and intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy.

A fractional laser provides both methods and leaves microscopic columns of untreated tissue throughout the treatment area. Fractional lasers were developed to shorten recovery time and reduce the risk of side effects.

Get Started!

What’s the First Step?

The first step in getting laser skin resurfacing in Red Bank and the surrounding Jersey area is to contact our office and schedule a consultation. During your appointment, Dr. Kaga will be able to examine the area you wish to treat and answer any questions about the laser resurfacing process.

A detailed analysis of your face and skin will also be performed so that we can formulate a plan to address the issue with the most optimal results. If you agree on the treatment, you can start your first session that day, or you may work with our production coordinator to book a time that best suits your needs.

Before your procedure, we will give you instructions to prepare your skin—avoid medications like aspirin and ibuprofen and refrain from smoking for two weeks. If you require a more intense skin resurfacing session, you may be asked to use a topical retinoid two to three weeks before your laser procedure. This will help prepare your skin for better results.

What to Expect on the Day of a Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatment

On the day of your treatment, Dr. Kaga or one of our trained, certified laser technicians will begin by administering a numbing agent to your skin and treatment areas. For extensive resurfacing, such as treatment of your whole face, you might be sedated. Your provider may treat wrinkles around your eyes, mouth, or forehead individually or the entire face.

During ablative laser skin resurfacing, the laser is directed at your skin. The laser beam destroys the outer layer of skin. At the same time, the laser heats the underlying skin, which stimulates collagen production over time, resulting in better skin tone and texture. Treating just parts of the face takes about 30 to 45 minutes, whereas a full face can take up to two hours, depending on the technique used and the size of the area treated. This approach usually needs only one treatment.

If you’re undergoing nonablative laser treatment or fractional Er: YAG laser resurfacing, you’ll likely need 1 to 3 treatments scheduled over weeks or months to get the results you’re looking for.

Laser Skin Resurfacing Recovery

Following the laser procedure, the treated areas will be bandaged, and a member of our team will give you instructions on how to care for your skin during the healing phase. After 24 hours, you will need to clean the treated areas four to five times a day and then apply an ointment such as petroleum jelly to prevent scabs from forming. You may also be instructed to apply a cool compress or a wrapped ice pack for 15 minutes every one to two hours, as needed, during the first 24 to 48 hours.

Swelling after laser skin resurfacing is normal. Sleeping on an extra pillow at night can also ease swelling. You may feel itching or stinging for 12 to 72 hours after the procedure. Your skin will dry and peel five to seven days after laser resurfacing.

Depending on the condition that was treated, healing typically takes 10 to 21 days. Once the skin heals, you can wear oil-free makeup to minimize redness, which usually fades in two to three months.
